Most guides on "removing watermarks from PDF" promise to remove any watermark with one click. That is not honest. Whether a watermark can be removed depends entirely on how it was added to the PDF. This guide explains the difference and tells you exactly what PDFree — and any other free tool — can and cannot do.
Added as PDF annotations (stamps) layered on top of the page content. Created by Acrobat's "Watermark" dialog, PDF-processing software, and many PDF tools. These are removable — they are separate objects from the page content and can be stripped without touching the underlying document.
Baked directly into the page's drawing instructions (content stream). Cannot be separated from the page content without OCR-level analysis or manual editing. No browser-based tool can remove these — they require specialized software like Acrobat Pro or QPDF with content editing.
The way to find out which type you have: open the PDF in a PDF reader, try to click on the watermark. If it selects as a separate object (a box appears around just the watermark), it is annotation-based and removable. If clicking just selects the whole page or the text beneath, it is baked into the content stream.
PDFree's merge, compress, split, and rotate tools include a "Remove watermarks" toggle that strips PDF annotations of type /Watermark and /Stamp while leaving functional elements like links (/Link) and form fields (/Widget) intact.
Drop or select your PDF. Files stay in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server.
Look for the "Remove watermarks" toggle in the options panel. Enable it before processing.
Run the tool (Merge, Compress, etc.) and download the result. Open it — annotation-based watermarks will be gone.
What gets removed: Annotations of type /Watermark and /Stamp — these include watermarks added by Acrobat's Watermark dialog, PDF tools, and most document management software.
What is preserved: Hyperlinks (/Link annotations), form fields (/Widget), comments (/Text), and all other annotation types remain untouched.

Enable "Remove watermarks" when you merge or compress your PDF.
Merge PDF Compress PDFIf the watermark is drawn directly into the page as raster or vector content (not as a separate annotation layer), no browser-based tool can remove it cleanly. This includes:
For these cases, options are limited:
It depends on the document and its terms. For documents you own or have created (your own company's branded PDF, your own draft watermarks, your own scans), removing a watermark is perfectly legal. For licensed content (stock images, purchased documents with "SAMPLE" watermarks), removing the watermark typically violates the license terms. Only remove watermarks from documents you are authorized to modify.
