How PDFree Merges PDFs — Lossless, Browser-Only

Unlike cloud PDF tools that upload your documents to a server for processing, PDFree uses pdf-lib — a JavaScript library that runs entirely in your browser. Your PDF pages are read from your device, assembled into a new PDF document in memory, and downloaded directly. No network request is made. No copy of your document ever exists outside your device.

The merge is lossless: images, fonts, vector graphics, bookmarks, and form fields are preserved at their original quality. No re-encoding happens during merging.

PDFree is open source (GNU AGPLv3) and has no server-side PDF processing infrastructure — it is architecturally incapable of storing your documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many PDF files can I merge at once?

There is no limit. PDFree merges entirely in your browser — the practical limit is your device's RAM. Most users successfully merge 20–50 files without issues.

Can I reorder files before merging?

Yes. Drag and drop files in the list to reorder them. The merged PDF will follow the order shown. Touch drag is also supported on mobile.

Does merging reduce PDF quality?

No. Merging is lossless — images, fonts, and vector graphics are preserved at original quality. No re-encoding happens.

Can I merge PDFs with different page sizes?

Yes. A4, Letter, A3, and custom sizes all merge correctly. Each page retains its original dimensions in the output.

Is my data private?

Completely. All processing happens in your browser. No file is ever transmitted to a server — your documents never leave your device.
