Why Adobe isn't necessary for filling forms

Adobe Reader (the free version) can only fill interactive PDF forms — PDFs that were specifically built with fillable fields. The moment someone sends you a scanned form, a printed form saved as PDF, or a simple flat PDF with lines and boxes, Adobe Reader offers nothing.

PDFree overlays text, check marks, and symbols directly on top of the PDF image — which means it works on any PDF regardless of whether it was built with interactive fields.

Step-by-step: fill a PDF form in 2 minutes

  1. 1
    Open PDFree Annotate

Go to pdfree.io/annotate-pdf/. No sign up, no download, no extension.

  2. 2
    Upload your PDF

Click "Choose files" or drag the PDF onto the page. The document renders instantly inside your browser — nothing is sent to a server.

  3. 3
    Select the Text tool (T)

In the toolbar at the top, tap the T icon. This puts you in text mode — click anywhere on the PDF to place a text box.

  4. 4
    Type your information

Click on each form field and type your name, date, address, or any other required information. You can drag the text box to reposition it precisely.

  5. 5
Use ✓ and ✗ for checkboxes

Switch to the Check (✓) or Cross (✗) tool to mark checkbox fields. Click once on the checkbox area to place the symbol.

  6. 6
    Download your completed form

Click "Apply & Download". Your filled PDF saves directly to your device — ready to email, print, or upload.

Tips for filling forms on mobile

Filling PDF forms on a phone is hard — fields are small and easy to miss. PDFree has two features that help:

  • Zoom slider — pinch to zoom in before tapping a field, or use the zoom control in the toolbar. This enlarges the view without changing the actual PDF size.
  • Magnifier lens — a small circular zoom window appears near your finger as you drag a text box, showing exactly where it will land.

Is it safe to fill sensitive forms online?

PDFree never uploads your file. The entire tool runs as client-side JavaScript — your PDF is processed in your browser's memory, on your device. No server receives it. This makes PDFree safe for sensitive documents like tax forms, medical intake forms, rental applications, and financial documents.

Compare this to most "free" PDF tools, which require uploading your document to their servers — where it may be stored, logged, or analyzed.
