How to Fill a PDF Form in 3 Steps

1
Open your PDF

Click Choose files or drag your PDF into the drop zone. The tool detects all interactive fields automatically — text boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns, and signature fields.

2
Fill in the fields

Type into text fields, toggle checkboxes, pick dropdown options. For signature fields, tap Tap to sign — draw with your finger or mouse, type your name in a cursive font, or upload an image of your signature.

3
Download the filled PDF

Click Fill PDF Form. The filled document is generated in your browser in seconds and downloaded directly to your device — no waiting, no email, no account.

What PDF Forms Can You Fill?

Government and tax forms

IRS W-9, W-4, I-9, and most government AcroForms are fully supported. All interactive fields are detected and rendered as fillable inputs.

Medical and insurance forms

Patient intake forms, HIPAA authorization forms, and insurance claims contain sensitive health data. Processing them locally means that information never reaches a third-party server.

HR and employment forms

Onboarding paperwork, direct deposit authorizations, and non-disclosure agreements often require a signature. Use the built-in signature pad to sign without printing.

Contracts and agreements

Service agreements, rental contracts, and consent forms with AcroForm fields can be filled and signed in one step. The resulting PDF is a standard document that opens in any PDF viewer.

Fill and submit without printing

Fill in the form, download the completed PDF, then email it as an attachment or upload it to a portal — no printing, scanning, or faxing needed. The downloaded file is a standard PDF accepted everywhere.

School, visa, and everyday paperwork

School enrollment forms, permission slips, and visa or immigration applications with AcroForm fields work the same way — detected instantly and ready to fill, no matter how sensitive the information.

Why Fill PDF Forms Here Instead of a Cloud Tool?

To fill PDF online free, most tools require uploading your document to a remote server. That means a copy of your form — and everything you fill out — is transmitted over the internet and stored on someone else's hardware. Not with PDFree.

PDFree works differently. The entire filling operation runs inside your browser using pdf-lib and pdf.js, two battle-tested open-source libraries. Your PDF and everything you type into it never leave your device. No server receives your data, not even PDFree's own servers.

There's a second difference that matters just as much: many online PDF tools treat your form as a picture. They flatten it and make you manually draw a text box or a signature box wherever you guess a field should go. PDFree preserves your form's real, interactive structure — when your PDF has AcroForm fields, PDFree detects and renders them directly, so you type into an actual text field, tick a real checkbox, and tab from one field to the next, the way the form was designed to work.

Many online PDF tools
  • ⬜ Flattens your form into a picture
  • ⬜ Draw text boxes by hand, guess the position
  • ⬜ Draw a signature box by hand
  • ⬜ No tabbing between fields
PDFree
  • ✅ Detects your form's real fields
  • ✅ Native text inputs, checkboxes, dropdowns
  • ✅ Draw, type, or upload your signature
  • ✅ Tab between fields like a real form

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my filled PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser using pdf-lib and pdf.js. Neither your original PDF nor the filled version is ever sent to a server. PDFree does not have access to your document.

What types of PDF form fields are supported?

PDFree supports all standard AcroForm field types: text inputs, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdown lists, and signature fields. Signature fields open a signing pad where you can draw with your finger or mouse, type your name in a cursive font, or upload an image of your signature.

What if my PDF has no fillable fields?

PDFree detects AcroForm interactive fields. If the PDF is a scanned image or a flat document without embedded form fields, you will see a "No fillable fields found" message. For flat PDFs you can use the Annotate or Watermark tools to add text overlays.

Is the drawn signature legally binding?

A drawn signature image inserted into a PDF is an electronic signature. Its legal validity depends on jurisdiction and context — for many everyday documents (consent forms, internal approvals, rental agreements) it is sufficient. For regulated legal contexts, consider a certified e-signature service that provides an audit trail.

Can I fill a password-protected PDF?

Only if you have the owner password. Encrypted PDFs with edit restrictions cannot be filled without the credentials. Remove the password first using the Protect PDF tool (enter the password, then save with no new password).

Is this a free PDF form filler with no sign up?

Yes. PDFree is a completely free PDF form filler — no sign up, no account, no installation. Open the tool, load your PDF, fill out or fill in the fields, and download the completed form. No email address required.

Can I fill and sign a PDF form online for free?

Yes. PDFree supports both filling and signing in one step. Fill in text fields and checkboxes, then tap any signature field to open a drawing pad — sign with your finger on mobile or your mouse on desktop. The signature is embedded in the downloaded PDF.

Does this actually fill in my form's real fields, or do I have to place text manually?

PDFree detects your PDF's real AcroForm fields — text boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns, and signature fields — and renders them as an actual fillable form. You are not drawing text boxes by hand or guessing at positioning. If your PDF has no embedded fields (a flat or scanned document), PDFree tells you directly rather than pretending to detect fields that aren't there.
