When you split a PDF on a server-based tool, your file travels over the internet to a third-party computer, gets processed there, then comes back. Every megabyte costs the provider bandwidth and compute time. To control those costs on free plans, tools like iLovePDF cap uploads at around 25MB and SmallPDF limits you to 2 tasks per day.
PDFree runs entirely in your browser. Your file never leaves your device. Since there are no server costs, there are no size limits to impose. The same tool that splits a 2MB PDF splits a 1GB PDF without any configuration change.
The real limit: your device's RAM. There is no software cap on file size. The only practical constraint is how much memory your browser can use.
If you hit a memory limit, split the PDF in batches: extract the first half of the pages, then extract the second half separately.
PDFree offers two split modes that cover the most common needs:
Select any pages by number or range (e.g. pages 1, 3, 10–20) and export them as one combined PDF. Perfect for extracting a chapter, removing unwanted pages, or creating a trimmed version.
Split every page into its own individual PDF, downloaded as a ZIP archive. Useful when you need to distribute or process pages individually — invoices, scans, report sections.
Tip for very large PDFs: Use Chrome or Edge for the best performance with large files. Close other browser tabs to free up RAM before processing files over 200MB.

Yes. PDFree has no file size limit for splitting. You can process 100MB, 500MB, or even 1GB PDFs for free because everything runs in your browser — there's no server to impose limits.
Yes. Choose 'Single file' mode, then enter the page numbers or ranges you want (e.g. "1, 3-5, 10"). PDFree extracts those pages into one new PDF that downloads immediately.
Server-based tools upload your file, process it remotely, and send the result back — three network trips for a 500MB file can take minutes. PDFree processes locally, so speed depends only on your device's CPU, not your internet connection.
