When you split a PDF on a server-based tool, your file travels over the internet to a third-party computer, gets processed there, then comes back. Every megabyte costs the provider bandwidth and compute time. To control those costs on free plans, tools like iLovePDF cap uploads at around 25MB and SmallPDF limits you to 2 tasks per day.
