Document Glossary — Clickable Term Definitions in a PDF

Editing a text for newcomers — a religious text, a textbook, a technical manual — usually means the same specialized terms come up again and again, and not every reader already knows them. PDFree's Document Glossary lets you paste a list of term/definition pairs and automatically highlights every matching occurrence in your PDF, attaching a standard clickable popup with the definition — without changing a single word of your original text.

The output is a normal PDF. It opens in Adobe Acrobat, Apple Preview, browser PDF viewers, and most mobile apps — the highlights and definitions use the PDF format's own built-in annotation system, not anything custom that only works in one viewer.

How it works

  1. Upload your PDF. The one you want to add definitions to.
  2. Paste your term list. One entry per line: the term, a dash, then its definition.
  3. Download the result. Every matching term is highlighted with a clickable definition attached — open it in any PDF viewer and click a highlighted term to see its meaning.

What this tool deliberately doesn't do

It doesn't rewrite or reflow your document's text, and it doesn't rely on hover-only tooltips or PDF JavaScript — both are unreliable outside one specific desktop viewer. Every definition opens on click or tap, the one interaction every major PDF viewer supports for annotations.
